Project Development Report [2019G]
In the last couple of weeks I drew maps of Sockburn. I haven’t got around to blogging that, instead I just posted the album of maps on the group and another group. A lot of maps production in some areas is more than drawing maps, it is software upgrades and other steps and dealing with…

MSL Branches [16C]: Glenham Branch Maps Set
It’s been quiet the last few days while I’ve been doing some planned maintenance on my computers, but here is a complete set of maps for the Glenham Branch. (Below is the first one – just click this link to see the rest)

MSL Branches [16B]: Glenham Branch 2 – Wyndham 1
Wyndham was the terminus of the Glenham Branch between 1882-1890 and again from 1930-1962 when the line finally closed. This map is based on 1938 imagery. The goods shed still exists today.

MSL Branches [16A]: Glenham Branch 1 – Edendale 1
Just a quick look at Edendale, 1974 and today. The turntable at the north end was installed sometime between 1947 and 1955. I don’t have any documentation of there being a turntable in any other location at Edendale but the original locomotive depot at Glenham closed with the Wyndham-Glenham section of the branch line in…

Kingston Branch [2B]: Invercargill-Makarewa 2 (Invercargill 2)
Here are aerials for Invercargill Loco for 1958, 1964, 1972, 1985, 1998 and present. I haven’t managed to pin down when the 1964 locomotive shed was demolished but it appears to be sometime between 2008-2013. For the whole of the Southland section of Volume 12, I am at present just making basic map tiles like…

MSL Dunedin [2K]: New aerial photography
In the course of looking at some stuff around Dunedin I have found Retrolens now has aerial photography from 1942, and also the 1960s and what appear to be official NZR surveys from 1972. 1960s coverage varies. Year 1960 coverage is not for the whole railway network in Dunedin, while 1967 coverage is at a…

MSL Branches [2G]: Methven Branch 7 / MSL Branches [3D]: Springburn Branch 4
The mosaics for the Methven Branch stations have now all been updated so the next job which will take a little bit of time tomorrow is to render out all the map tiles to be imported into Qgis to start mapping these stations. The next job is to create the station mosaics for the Springburn…

MSL Branches [3C]: Springburn Branch 3
As a result of the work undertaken at Archives New Zealand over the past couple of weeks I now have a pile of info about the Springburn Branch. The next stage is like Methven to go through it all. I have been busy with other stuff for the past week or two and still have…

MSL Branches [3B]: Springburn Branch 2 / Project website update
I have started researching the Springburn Branch today. This will be a quick project like the Methven one, with only three morning sessions to look at 103 files. It will take in the latter day history of the line as well as all of the technical information such as the layouts of each station yard,…

Project update
Quick update as to where things are up to right now. I was busy over the weekend doing some local transport activism so there hasn’t quite been the expected progress. However I expect to have the Methven branch tiles finished today ready to begin mapping and also push on with the Otago Central Railway at…
