NZRM Update 2025-06-03

This month the main area of work in the maps has been parts of Volume 6, specifically Upper Hutt to Featherston, and latterly Volume 9, which is being completely reorganised, along with the replacement mosaic projects for the Methven and Springburn Branches; the original mosaics project was last heard of in 2022 and seems to have been accidentally deleted. Recreation of these mosaic projects is a part of creating continuous historical aerial corridor coverage for these branch lines in accordance with current standards for mapping historical rail corridors.

The web maps update for this month is currently being captured and with Volume 7 added for the first time in the 2025 maps edition. Since it is expected that some issues will be found in the capture of Volume 7, it is unlikely the update will go live on the website before the end of this week. It has been noted that South Island content in the web maps, apart from being well out of date, also has many gaps due to the presently incomplete migration of most of the South Island Qgis projects to the new formats introduced several years ago. This should be rectified by the end of the year at the rate of one project being added each month as previously indicated.

The bulk request that has been in preparation for 2 TB of aerial images has now been finalised and should be with Linz staff by the end of this week. The images being requested cover a variety of volumes, including volume 1, 4, 6, 7 and 9. Once these are received the disk storage for these aerials will be completely full so the intention is that work will shift to those volumes in order to consume the aerials needed and make room for the next request in 2026.
