Palmerston North Gisborne Line [0A]: PNGL maps revision project commencement
It’s been four years since I published the maps for this section (Volume 8 in the old volume numbering scheme) and having road tripped the entire length of the route in June this year it’s time for both updates to the core maps and a more user friendly format for use in the field, especially…

Kingston Branch [2F]: Makarewa-Lumsden, Mararoa-Kingston. Mossburn, Hedgehope, Tuatapere, Wairio
So now that I have mapped Invercargill-Makarewa and Lumsden-Mararoa on the Kingston Branch, work will be continuing to map, firstly, the rest of the Kingston Branch, followed by the Mossburn Branch, Hedgehope Branch, Tuatapere Branch, Orawia Branch, Wairio Branch and Ohai Railway Board section. This will proceed at a slower pace than previously on the…

Website change
Later this evening the website will be altered. www.nzrailmaps.nz will continue to point to a Trainweb site, which will have a single page on it. This page will in its turn link to a new site hosted on WordPress, the address of which is http://nzrailmaps.wordpress.com/ So Trainweb will continue to act as the landing page…

Web site update
As previously described, due to the closedown of Google Plus, content I currently collate there will be relocated. I am currently looking into a free wordpress.com site to replace both the existing website (trainweb) and the Google Plus collations into one site. Trainweb has been very good and I will continue to use it in…

Website: Major change to Google Plus
Google announced three weeks ago they would be closing Google Plus down. The NZ Rail Maps project does use Google Plus to collate links to some of our content. We don’t actually host content on Google Plus itself but we do use other Google services and these aren’t affected. Because of this change in Google…

Website
The website is back operating again as I have been in contact with the domain hosting company (Domains4less) who have apparently decided to have this great idea of migrating their domains to a new platform without, it seems, informing me. Because their new system only lets me redirect one URL to trainweb, the site will…

Website problems
For the purposes of NZ Rail Maps I have a domain registered which is www.nzrailmaps.nz This is actually redirected to www.trainweb.org/nzrailmaps which is hosted on a server in the US. At the moment the company which hosts my domain nzrailmaps.nz, Domains4Less, seems to be having some sort of meltdown (so it would appear) and if…

Current maps progress
At the present I am having a lot of computer free time for a break so there will be no progress on maps work until mid October. The station map tiles for the Methven Branch have been completed, while those for the Springburn Branch will be started soon.

MSL Branches [3B]: Springburn Branch 2 / Project website update
I have started researching the Springburn Branch today. This will be a quick project like the Methven one, with only three morning sessions to look at 103 files. It will take in the latter day history of the line as well as all of the technical information such as the layouts of each station yard,…

Main North Line [0A]: Full set of MNL diagrams
After my “field trip” up north in June I discussed the ideas for making the maps easier to use on a handheld device. The assumption being maps could either be viewed on the Google Photos site online, or downloaded to a device and browsed offline. After considering a range of options, adding navigational arrows and…
