  • Otago Central Railway [63H]: Ranfurly-Alexandra 8 (Omakau-Lauder 1)

This is really just a quick catchup, because I haven’t done much on this section over the past couple of weeks. Since the next station up the line from Omakau is Lauder, I need to start working on that. So far what I have covered is the Google Earth streetview of this section of the…

  • North Island Main Trunk [2]: Johnsonville-Tawa 2

Time for a quick update on progress with this. I had hoped to be further along with this process but the work needed on the big aerial image mosaics (there is one with 17 layers for the Johnsonville end and a similar or bigger one for the Tawa end) took a very long time to…

  • North Island Main Trunk [1]: Johnsonville-Tawa 1

The NIMT is not an area I was planning to work on in the near future but there has been an enquiry about this section of the former NIMT route, so I am taking a look at the maps I have of it. First thing is to download the LDS aerial photos of the area…

  • Midland Line [1C]: Otira-Greymouth 3: Otira 2

I just did an evaluation of aerial photography availability for everything west of Otira. The answer is that there is no suitable historical aerial photography to do maps with west of Otira. The net outcome is there will not be detailed historical maps for the Midland Line beyond Otira, or the SNL in the near…

  • Otago Central Railway [63G]: Ranfurly-Alexandra 7 (Chatto Creek-Omakau)

Here’s the complete finalised map set for Omakau and a few Google pictures from along the way. Bridge 74  just west of Omakau and the deep rock cutting at the west end of it. Bridge 74A was added to the line in 1964 to eliminate a level crossing on State Highway 85, the site of…

  • Midland Line [1B]: Otira-Greymouth 2: Otira 1

Last year I did some posts on the Midland and SNL, unfortunately most of the images from older posts have disappeared because of the change in my Google account. However this is only the second post on the Midland Line, so not much is actually missing. I am not planning to do a series of…

  • Otago Central Railway [63F]: Ranfurly-Alexandra 6 (Chatto Creek-Omakau)

I am revising the maps of Omakau at present. This has allowed much sharper historical imagery due to lessons learned in how to get the best result out of Gimp. At the same time I have added a 1938 aerial photo and the masking has been extended to cover more of the station precinct including…

  • Otago Central Railway [63E]: Ranfurly-Alexandra 5 (Galloway-Chatto Creek)

Here are the completed maps and diagrams for Chatto Creek. A point of interest is near the 119 milepeg where the chainage chart shows a siding for a “Rails and Sleepers Depot”. This is not particularly obvious on aerial photos so it may have just been a construction facility when the line was being built.

  • Maps from other people or in other formats

Here is a link to a post on Facebook about a map of the Moutohora Branch drawn by Graeme Jupp who is a retired professional cartographer. If you are not a member of the group the post appeared in you will have to join, if they won’t let you in too bad, I can’t do…

  • Project Update

It’ll be a few days until I have some more stuff to publish so this is just a quick interim update. Otago Central Railway: Right now I am finishing off the map of Chatto Creek with adding the extra aerial photos from 1938 and 1956 to the 1965 image that I already have. So pretty…
